sixty small cranes to go-- The Peace Promotion Division of The City of Hiroshima 市民局平和推進課 will be hanging the final project in one of the booths (for displaying folded cranes) surrounding the Children's Peace Monument. After the Portland display is hung they will be sent-- stay tuned! If you're knitting more, here's a challenge for you to keep them as small as possible-- cheers to trying to keep the size down so that Knitnotwar 1,0o0 fits in the booth sweetly!

If you are in Portland, please join knitters at Knit Purl, a fantastic knitting boutique in downtown Portland, for two knitnotwar Nights (Feb. 4th & Mar. 4th) as they help complete the project by donating the 300 cranes needed to finish the project. project update!

Hello everyone, I hope you all are having a happy summer and are not finding it too warm to knit!

I have promised several friends and knitters that I would post a project update!: The deadline for cranes has been extended-- so many folks have asked for more time that it was impossible not to. As the new deadline approaches, September 1, hundreds of lovely cranes are pouring into the mailbox. From the sounds of it, however, more than a few folks have had to set down their needles on the project and I may have to once again extend the deadline as I find more knitters to fill their RSVP spaces (we shall see, between non-RSVPers sending cranes and myself we just may make 1,000!) If all the cranes make it in by September 1, the date for the final install shall be set and I'll email the time/place to all!

In the meantime, check out the Summer 2007 issue of Vogue Knitting 'Knit 1 Magazine' there is a lovely artcle on the project with some pretty pictures to boot! If you're in Portland, stop by 'Close Knit' (2140 NE Alberta) where the cranes are currently on display.

RSVP Deadline

Hello All,
The RSVP deadline for cranes, March 1st, has passed (though a few more knitters have squeezed in!) I'm happy to say we have over 1,000 cranes pledged and the project looks amazing. Please visit back to the blog for updated photos-- I have been receiving crane donations every week in the mail-- the strand is growing steadily. Thank you everyone who has been involved and stay tuned for the announcement of knitnotwar's final display space. As always, please do be in touch if you have any questions, I'm happy to offer help in knitting/felting/the pattern/or advice in setting up your own 'knitnotwar' project!

The knitnotwar 1,0o0 project

knitnotwar 1,0o0—a display of a thousand knitted cranes, involves a large number of artists, crafters, knitters and others in a large scale, community based, public art installation-- celebrating the quiet logic of peace. More than a hundred artists will knit one thousand origami style cranes, to be displayed late 2007 in Portland, Oregon.

The origami crane is an international symbol of peace, due to the hopeful and heroic story of Sadako Sasaki. Sadako died of Leukemia after exposure from US atom bombings of Hiroshima in 1945. Following a Japanese legend of folding 1,000 paper cranes-- a kind of prayer for long life and recovery-- Sadako hoped to get well. She completed over 1,000 folded cranes before dying on October 25, 1955 at the age of 12. Thousands of artists, children, religious groups, and other organizations commit to folding strands of a thousand cranes every year to express their commonality in banning nuclear weapons-- their solidarity for peace.

To reach the goal of a thousand cranes, pledge to donate 10 (RSVP deadline March 1, actual donation deadline May 1, 2007), or organize a group of knitters and pledge 100! You can get the pattern PDF here (to the right of the screen-- I print page one, flip it over in the printer and print page two-- it makes a nice pamphlety sort of document).
